Vitamin K2 (MK-7): Why It's in Your HOP Box
The Calcium Traffic Controller Your Body Needs After 40
Calcium is essential for strong bones, but calcium in the wrong place is dangerous. Calcium deposits in your arteries (vascular calcification) are a leading predictor of heart disease, and this risk increases significantly after menopause.
Vitamin K2, specifically the MK-7 form, activates two critical proteins: osteocalcin (which binds calcium into bone) and matrix GLA protein (which prevents calcium from depositing in arteries). In simple terms, K2 tells calcium where to go and where not to go.
This is why vitamin D3 and K2 should always be taken together. Vitamin D3 increases calcium absorption, but without K2, that extra calcium may end up in your blood vessels instead of your bones.
In HOP Box, vitamin K2 (MK-7) is part of the Daily D blend, paired with vitamin D3 for optimal calcium metabolism.
What the Research Shows
Bone density in postmenopausal women
Bone loss accelerates dramatically after menopause. K2 supplementation has been shown to slow this process.
Key study: A 3-year randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 244 healthy postmenopausal women found that vitamin K2 (MK-7, 180 mcg/day) significantly decreased the age-related decline in bone mineral content and bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck. The K2 group also showed improved bone strength indices.

Arterial stiffness and cardiovascular health
Arterial stiffness is a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular events, and it increases with age and declining estrogen.
Key study: The same 3-year trial by Knapen et al. also found that vitamin K2 (MK-7) supplementation significantly improved arterial stiffness as measured by pulse wave velocity in postmenopausal women with above-average baseline stiffness. This is one of the few nutrients shown to actually reverse arterial calcification.

Synergy with vitamin D3
The D3 + K2 combination is more effective than either nutrient alone for bone and cardiovascular health.
Key study: A randomized controlled trial found that the combination of vitamin D3 and K2 was significantly more effective at reducing undercarboxylated osteocalcin (a marker of inadequate K2 status) and improving bone formation markers than either vitamin alone. This confirms the synergistic relationship.

Dental health
K2 activates osteocalcin not only in bones but also in teeth, where it supports remineralization and dental health.
Key study: Research has shown that vitamin K2 activates dentin matrix protein and osteocalcin in dental tissues, supporting tooth mineralization and potentially reducing cavity formation. Clinical observations suggest K2-sufficient populations have better dental health outcomes.

Why It's in HOP Box
Dr. Amy Killen included vitamin K2 (MK-7) in HOP Box because it solves the calcium paradox that many women face after 40: you need more calcium for your bones, but you also need to keep that calcium out of your arteries. K2 is the bridge between these two competing needs.
The MK-7 form was chosen because it has a longer half-life than MK-4, meaning it remains active in your bloodstream longer and requires only a single daily dose. Paired with vitamin D3 in the Daily D blend, it creates a complete calcium management system.
The HOP Box Difference
- MK-7 form for longer-lasting activity than MK-4
- Paired with vitamin D3 in the Daily D blend for synergistic calcium metabolism
- Protects bones AND arteries simultaneously
- Doctor-formulated by Amy Killen, MD, a longevity medicine specialist
- Convenient daily packs for consistent daily support
