Astaxanthin: Why It's in Your HOP Box

The Antioxidant That Protects Your Skin From the Inside Out

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment that gives salmon, shrimp, and flamingos their pink color. But its real claim to fame is its extraordinary antioxidant capacity: astaxanthin is roughly 6,000 times more potent than vitamin C and 550 times more potent than vitamin E at neutralizing singlet oxygen, one of the most damaging forms of free radicals.

What makes astaxanthin particularly valuable for aging is that it crosses both the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier, meaning it can protect your brain and eyes in ways most antioxidants cannot. It also accumulates in the skin, where it provides internal protection against UV damage and supports collagen production.

In HOP Box, astaxanthin is part of the Damage Control blend, providing broad-spectrum antioxidant protection alongside quercetin, fisetin, apigenin, and curcumin.

What the Research Shows

Skin aging, wrinkles, and elasticity

Multiple human trials have demonstrated that oral astaxanthin supplementation visibly improves skin quality.

Key study: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 65 healthy women found that astaxanthin supplementation (4 mg/day for 16 weeks) significantly reduced wrinkle depth, improved skin elasticity, and increased skin moisture content compared to placebo. These effects were confirmed by objective measurements including corneometer and cutometer readings.

UV protection

Sun damage is the primary external driver of skin aging (photoaging). Astaxanthin provides a layer of internal photoprotection.

Key study: A randomized controlled trial found that astaxanthin supplementation (4 mg/day for 9 weeks) significantly increased the minimal erythema dose (MED), the amount of UV radiation needed to cause redness, meaning participants' skin was more resistant to sun damage after supplementation.

Eye health

Age-related macular degeneration and eye fatigue are growing concerns, especially with increased screen time. Astaxanthin's ability to cross the blood-retinal barrier makes it uniquely suited for eye protection.

Key study: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 49 healthy adults with eye strain found that astaxanthin supplementation (6 mg/day for 4 weeks) significantly improved accommodation amplitude and reduced symptoms of eye fatigue compared to placebo.

Exercise recovery and muscle endurance

Oxidative stress from exercise contributes to muscle fatigue and delayed recovery. Astaxanthin has shown benefits for active adults.

Key study: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that astaxanthin supplementation (4 mg/day for 6 months) significantly improved endurance performance during a cycling time trial and increased fat oxidation during exercise in competitive cyclists.

Why It's in HOP Box

Dr. Amy Killen included astaxanthin in HOP Box because oxidative damage is one of the oldest and most established mechanisms of aging. Free radicals damage your DNA, proteins, and cell membranes every day, and this damage accumulates over time. Astaxanthin provides exceptional antioxidant protection with specific benefits for the organs women care about most: skin, eyes, and brain.

As a physician who specializes in both longevity medicine and aesthetic procedures, Dr. Killen knows that protecting your skin from the inside is just as important as topical skincare. Astaxanthin delivers that internal photoprotection.
